NJFON issues statement on Judge’s Ruling on Family Detention

From Melissa Bowe, Program and Advocacy Manager:

National Justice For Our Neighbors applauds Judge Dolly Gee’s ruling late Friday night, and agrees  that the Obama administration’s current system of detaining immigrant women and children is deplorable and a violation of an 18-year-old court settlement. We strongly urge the administration to not appeal and comply with the judge’s ruling to end the immoral, harmful and costly practice of family detention.

Our faith tradition teaches us to welcome the strangers in our midst with hospitality, and to protect those who are fleeing persecution.  As members of the faith community, we hope that this ruling signals the end of the mass incarceration of women and children seeking asylum in the United States.
