Border Deal is a Shameful Attempt at Political Posturing and Must be Rejected

Immigration Law and Justice Network is in total dismay reviewing the highly anticipated Senate bill released over the weekend that includes immigration tradeoffs for a one-time foreign aid package.

If this bill becomes law, it will give DHS the authority to close the border and expel migrants without asylum screening when crossing hits a certain threshold. Additionally, the bill would raise credible fear standards and increase immigration detention.

This legislative deal denies refugees their legal right to seek asylum, with no due process, putting the final nail in the coffin of our asylum system. This is an absolute violation of international law and our values as Americans and people of faith.

Asylum seekers should not be treated as political pawns. Asylum is a human right, and for many, it is a matter of life and death.

“Make no mistake, destroying asylum will not fix the immigration system or solve problems for our country,” states Co-Executive Director Melissa Bowe. “It will, however, result in the preventable persecution, torture, and death of thousands of refugees, forcing us all to turn our backs on who we are and who we want to be.

Congress and the Biden Administration cannot bargain away the lives of immigrants to fund wars abroad. The President should be undoing his predecessor’s anti-asylum policies, not expanding them or solidifying them into law.

We urge Congress to unequivocally reject this bill.”
